Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA)
Combined FGASA Level One Nature
and Marine Guiding Course.
Afritracks cc, Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) endorsed trainer are, with WWF and the De Hoop Collection, conducting a combined THETA-accredited FGASA Level One Nature and Marine guiding course at De Hoop Nature Reserve between June and November 2009.
The course, at NQF Level 3, comprises six residential study blocks of seven days each conducted over the six month period. Students are required to complete practical and computer research assignments between study blocks. Students need to provide their own Laptop computers and mountain bikes. Limited shared computer facilities will however be available.
The twenty study modules include the following exciting subjects: Marine and terrestrial ecology, astronomy, geology, birds and birding, arthropods, reptiles, mammals, meteorology, botany (includes Fynbos and Renosterveld), history and more.
Although not mandatory, a matriculation certificate with mathematics and science/biology is recommended. Candidates are required to attend a pre-course selection interview. Nature guides are expected to lead from the front and proven leadership ability is a strong recommendation.
The all-inclusive course cost is R16 000. Attendance is limited to twelve candidates and there is a possibility of sponsorship for six students.
After successful completion you should be equipped for a long term career rather than just a job.
